Darko Orphans was established in 2005 to serve the needs of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC). It’s a Legal entity Registered under the Ministry of Gender, Sports, Culture and Social Services as a Non-Profit Community Based Organization. It first started operations, and still is in the Kathonzweni sub-county of Makueni County. Here, Darko has been involved in meeting the medical, education and food needs for OVCs. Darko’s policy for assisting OVCs has been to take care of the OVCs while in foster homes and not to withdraw them into a children’s home. The foster homes are located within the locality the children come from and therefore receive family care in familiar surroundings. Currently Darko has under its care 162 OVCs, who continue to receive the needed assistance. Darko has since expanded into the Makindu area of the same Makueni County, through Darko Farm and Darko Girls Secondary School which admits Darko Orphans girls’ who have successfully completed primary level education and is also open to other girls in the community and countrywide.
